Nice post and a great film! I believe Jaeckel won an Academy Award for his role. I sure enjoyed him in his western roles.

And yes, the level of urgency is rising, higher and higher, for the entire planet. From China to the Gulf, the story is the same. Man blithely going about his daily business of growing the economy while everything dies around us.

A very good piece on Jim Peden who is really a good example of how people like him use the power of the Internet to log on and disrupt serious discussions with their perhaps mentally unbalanced mind games. Jim has befriended Andrew Revkin of the NY Times and often posts on Andy's FB page, complete rubbish and he has insulted as many climate activists as he can. Hi Bob. Thanks for taking the time to research, write, and post this. At some level, it makes me very sad. This isn't some silly game. Back in 1979, the NRC said the evidence, while not conclusive, was strong enough to justify government action. Jokers like this guy have caused us to fritter away 31 years, making the eventual response more painful, more costly, and much less effective than it would have been if we had stayed the course on President Carter's renewable & efficiency goals.

I think that you entirely missed the point. Free speech is granted by the our constitution to individuals and the press. Period. The drafters--including my great, great, etc. uncle and also Thomas Jefferson were very leery of the undue influence of corporations (see Boston Tea Party). The barking dog comment does not relate to the noise or delivery systems but rather the source of the noise. Corporation do not have speech rights. What they say is and should be regulated. Certainly Exxon should not be able to say that gas is good to eat. Right? And cigarette companies should not be able to say that smoking is good for your health when we know it is not. Right? So why should they be able to "sell" is candidates that might be good for them and not us?

Your comparison of free speech to a barking dog is silly. The right of free speech allows for saying whatever you like without governmental squelching. However, that does not allow anyone to go up to your house and talk to you through a bullhorn at any time of day. The right of free speech applies to the content, not the actual delivery of the content.

I actually proposed that idea to the person who was calling to create the oil from algae farms around the Salton Sea in Southern California.

His answer was interesting in that he thought that the algae in question stood little chance in competing with native species, and that very few species had any oil at all. That the problem would be keeping the oil algae free of the native forms rather than the other way around.

I was unable to independently verify this. Perhaps we need to start distilling Asian Carp.
